The HTML 5 specification is backward compatible with non-supporting browsers due to the way that web browsers were designed to process or ignore undefined tags and attributes.

One of the neatest features of HTML 5 is the ability to use data-* attributes for any element.  This allows the page developer to insert custom metadata which will be used by script in the page.
